Buff Object Pages[]

Spreading the taint of Emulated Object Oriented Wiki-ing :)

See the entry for the buff Warmed on the main page, Warmed and Template:Buff for more details.

One possible thing that we can do is to create a format template that can embed the icon for a buff into a page, that when mouse over, shows the description and bonus details in tooltip, and when clicked, goes to the page for the buff itself.

Comments/criticisms welcome. The ultimate goal here is to define the "data" once, at a "central" location, so that we don't get possibility of discrepency of data within the wiki, and use it everywhere easily by using specialized presentation templates (such as Template:Infobox buff)

I've put together a simple documentation on how to create a buff page + how to use the infobox and the inline display template at Template:Buff/doc.

I'd have to see the finished project, but I'm not sure at the moment. It seems easier just to link to the central location and see all the data there.--Bunnyboi 05:53, April 1, 2011 (UTC)
I don't mean getting rid of list. List should stay, but instead of list using a static copy if the info, it pulls it live from the individual Buff pages. To the end user, no difference (still sees the list of buffs + stats) but if somebody changes the stats at the buff page, the list will be updated automatically when refreshed (iow no need to have people to maintain the list content after a buff is inserted properly once)
Also makes it easier to insert the Buff link into other pages. Instead of something plain like Warmed, we can have Warmed. There is nothing like the feeling of a warm flame to make a Sim happy. Warmed (which just uses this {{buff show|Warmed}}). Comes with extra info when you mouseover the icon.

I have a few issues with the idea.
  • Wouldn't this mean making a lot of pages? It sounds like there would essentially have to be a page for every buff in the game.
  • Isn't it just as easy to change a buff's info in the central list as it would be to change it on its own page? Finding the buff in the list is just a matter of hitting Control+F and typing in its name.
  • Wouldn't it be much more difficult to add a multiple buffs to the wiki at once? As it is, it's just a matter of adding a line in the tables for each buff, putting in the info, and publishing the page. Wouldn't Sims need to make a new page, put in the info box, put in the data, publish the page, and repeat the process for every new buff?
  • Many of the buffs share the same or very similar icons. Presenting a buff by just showing its icon could sometimes be confusing, since it would have to be rolled over to see what buff it is.

  • Actually, making a page for each Buff IS the Wiki way. At the very least, even if we use the table, we SHOULD still create the wiki page for each buff and add a proper redirect to the list page.
  • Changing the table's info at some central location is easy. Using it is not. For example, what if I need say the focus of a buff in another page? Allowing extractable properties allows even for stuff like computations (e.g. sum up all the focus bonus to find net bonus for a list of buffs). Table don't support anything beyond a one-glance display. And making each buff have its own page also allows for buff specific info, which may be too bulky in a table (e.g. detailed relations to achivements/quests/traits). Last of all, we can still have the table for what we do now.
  • Adding buffs to wiki can actually be more flexible. E.g. for fast adding, we can still add to table like now. Then for people (like me) who are free, I can create the back end and updates the entry in the table. People who uses the table will not see the diff (except for some new linked wikiwords). The non-linked entries in the table can be seen as future page links (making all the buff names into wikiword is a good indication)
  • As for similar icons, we can always throw in the name, which is already done (just suppressed by a parameter). Warmed. There is nothing like the feeling of a warm flame to make a Sim happy. Warmed (which just uses this {{buff show|Warmed|size=30|showlabel=1}})

I think it would be a little much to add a page for each buff, even redirects to the list; the list will be more likely be at the top of the list of a search for any given buff. But if it doesn't alter the way the list works, I think I can support the idea. It would be easier for me to write and people to read "...gives the Warmed. There is nothing like the feeling of a warm flame to make a Sim happy. Warmed buff" than "...gives the Warmed buff, granting +10 Focus for 45 minutes."--Bunnyboi 08:41, April 1, 2011 (UTC)

We need a navbox for buffs[]

For easier navigation, searching.

The title link of the navbox should link back to this list for a global reference. This navbox should be included in all buff related pages at the bottom for easier... well.. navigation.

An example is this one for equipment Template:Navbox equipment. See Equipment for an idea of how it is used.

Duration sorting problem.[]

Sorting buffs by duration is a bit off, since the wiki thinks "30 minutes > 1 hour." I'm suggesting we put all buff durations in the form of hours from now on (0.5 hours for 30 minutes, 24 hours for 1 day, etc.)--Bunnyboi 06:48, April 1, 2011 (UTC)

I don't think this will solve the problem (besides making it harder to read). There are a some buffs which are not time-based and some buffs which may have random times? Keeping it as a text string is fine. Perhaps we should really just get rid of the sorting part since sorting on duration does not seem very useful (as compared to by Name and by focus bonus)

duration check[]

I strongly suspect that some durations are incorrectly rounded down. Prob need to check again, esp those with 5 hours or 11 hours (I suspect that 6 hours and 12 hours are more likely) --Spheris 09:15, April 15, 2011 (UTC)

More buff categories?[]

I have a feeling that buffs from drinking potions (crafted by Wizard,Theif ,etc) should be categorized separated from foods or drinks.
But I'm new here and can't find a way to do that

Could somebody help?

What about "Sad Drunk"? 71.206.5.36 02:25, May 1, 2011 (UTC)

This is for the mean drunk buff's description, got it while I had Leliana drinking 3 straight mugs of ale

"Drinking too much has put <sim> in a bad mood. Better stay out of his/her way!"

There is also a Sad Drunk but I forgot the description.Gyrobot 20:33, May 5, 2011 (UTC)

List split[]

The list of buffs is rather...huge. How about we use Buff for a description of what a buff is, and perhaps some tips on getting the better ones, while we move the list to List of buffs? The list of buffs is somewhat more narrow in scope than general information on buffs, so the split wouldn't really make it harder to find info. DarwinSighs 16:10, May 31, 2011 (UTC)
